Broom Leys Surgery is fortunate to be involved in training fifth year Medical Students at the practice.

Student Nurses

Broom Leys Surgery is fortunate to be involved in Student Nurse Training. This is an exciting opportunity for them to learn about Practice Nursing, they are fully supported by Trained Practice Nurses during their placement.

If you do not wish the student nurse to remain present during your appointment, please do not worry to ask for a private consult with the Nurse.

Nurse Practitioners

Karen Smith (f)

Nurse Practitioner

NVQ3, DIPHE-Adult Nursing, DIPHE Pharmacology, BSc-Spec Nurse in Primary Care, BSc in Prescribing.

Karen is a specialist Nurse Practitioner who works alongside the G.P’s running the Minor Illness Clinic. This is where her skills and priorities lie. Karen also works closely with the management team and co-ordinating care home visits and requirements. Karen also works to support the rest of the admin/reception team where necessary.

Emma Hilliar (f)

Advanced Nurse Practitioner

BSc (Hons) Nursing, PG Cert Practice Nursing, Practice Certificate (Level 7) Non-Medical Prescribing

Emma is an Advanced Clinical Practitioner. She has worked in Primary Care since she qualified as a nurse in 2013. She sees patients in surgery with minor illness and on the day presentations. She has a special interest in Paediatrics.

Laura Draycott (f)

Emergency Care Practitioner.

Nurses

As well as dealing with minor illness, dressings and minor wounds, the nurses run most of the preventative care programmes. This includes asthma clinics, blood pressure checks, cervical smears, blood tests, diabetic and heart disease checks and vaccinations. The nursing team also give advice concerning diet, travel and general health matters.

Healthcare Assistants

Healthcare assistants carry out Phlebotomy duties each day as well as taking blood pressure, ear syringing, ECG’s , INR’s, Diabetic Foot Checks, NHS Health Checks and simple dressings.

Pharmacists

Gurjit Ghataora

Gurjit is our practice pharmacist, who is available at the practice Monday to Friday.

Gurjit can help our patients with medication related queries and carry out medication reviews for those on multiple medicines. As a pharmacist, she acts as a source of medicines information for all of the practice team and patients (e.g. around doses, side effects and possible alternatives). In addition, she helps to keep the medical records up to date in line with key changes regarding medications and changes post hospital discharge and appointments. She also has experience of working in the mental health speciality at an NHS Trust.

Community Midwives

Antenatal clinics are held on Thursday afternoons by a member of the midwifery team. They can be contacted by telephone on 0116 258 4834. As well as antenatal clinics they undertake regular visits to expectant mothers, new mothers and their babies. Initial ‘New Booking’ appointments are held on Wednesday afternoons. Please make an initial appointment between the 8th and 10th week of pregnancy.

Community Nurses

The District Nurses provide nursing care to the terminally ill, housebound, elderly and disable individuals and their families.

Health Visitors

Health Visitors are trained nurses with further qualifications in Midwifery and health visiting. The Health Visitors provide a full range of children’s services including child health surveillance and well baby clinics. The Health Visitors are based at Whitwick Road Surgery and can be contacted on 01530 468602.
