Internet Safety

There are three leading organisations that make up the UK Safer Internet Centre, these are Children International, Internet Watch Foundation and SWGfL.

Their mission is to – Promote the safe and responsible use of technology for young people

The partnership was appointed by the European Commission as the Safer Internet Centres of the Insafe Network. The centre has three main functions, these are:

  1. Awareness Centre: To provide advice and support to children and young people, parents and cares, schools and the children’s workforce and to coordinate Safer Internet Day across the UK.
  2. Helpline: To provide support to professionals working with children and young people with online safety issues.
  3. Hotline: An anonymous and safe place to report and remove child sexual abuse imagery and videos. wherever they are found in the world.

The UK Safer Internet Centre is funded under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme og the European Commission. As such they contribute to the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) core service platform to share resources, services and practices between the European Safer Internet Centres and advice and information about a better internet to the general public. In line with the European Commission’s Better Internet for Kids Strategy, the key vision behind the BIK core service platform is to create a better internet for children and young people.

Health Care Professionals

Key advice for those working in the health care sector – including GPs, schools and community nurses as well as child and adolescent mental health professionals – to help them understand the impact of digital technologies on young people and their mental health in particular.

It is vital that health professionals:

  • Have knowledge of the latest online threats, risks and trends in online communications and social networking
  • Understand the impact of technology and new and emerging apps and trends have on the health of young people and their relationships
  • Encourage and support young people to develop healthy relationships with technology and manage their mental health
  • Consider the use of technology by parents and carers which may impact on family life
  • Include relevant questions in assessments and when treating patients to gain an understanding of the role of technology in their lives
